A funeral feast in Uttar Pradesh has triggered widespread panic after it was discovered that raita served to mourners was made using milk from a buffalo bitten by a rabid dog.
Health officials reported that nearly 200 people rushed to hospitals for anti-rabies vaccinations following the revelation. The incident occurred in Mainpuri district, where the buffalo had been attacked days earlier but its milk was still used in food preparation.
Authorities quickly launched a public health campaign, urging anyone who consumed the dish to seek immediate medical attention. Doctors emphasized that while rabies transmission through milk is rare, the risk cannot be dismissed, especially when the source animal was infected.
Local hospitals were overwhelmed by the sudden influx of people seeking treatment, highlighting both the fear surrounding rabies and the fragility of rural health infrastructure. Officials reassured the public that preventive measures were being taken and that vaccine supplies were sufficient to meet demand.
The episode underscores the urgent need for awareness about zoonotic diseases in rural communities, where close contact with livestock often blurs the line between food safety and infection risk.
