Bangkok, Dec. 8, 2025
Thailand’s military confirmed it carried out airstrikes on Cambodian positions early Monday after clashes broke out across multiple sections of the disputed frontier. The escalation comes just weeks after both nations signed a ceasefire agreement mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Details:
• Fighting intensified around 5:00 a.m. local time, with Thai forces reporting one soldier killed and at least seven wounded.
• Cambodia accused Thailand of firing first, while Thai officials claimed Cambodian troops breached the truce by mobilizing heavy weaponry and repositioning combat units.
• Thai Air Force jets targeted Cambodian military installations to suppress what officials described as “supporting fire attacks.”
• Cambodian authorities reported three civilians seriously injured and urged Thailand to halt hostilities immediately.
• Civilians on both sides of the border fled to shelters as artillery and gunfire spread across contested areas in Buriram and Ubon Ratchathani provinces.
Background:
The two Southeast Asian neighbours have long disputed sections of their border, with flare-ups occurring periodically. A five-day border war in July 2025 prompted international mediation, culminating in an October ceasefire signed in Kuala Lumpur. Monday’s clashes mark the most serious breach of that agreement to date.
Outlook:
Regional observers warn that the renewed fighting risks destabilising broader Southeast Asian security. Both governments face mounting pressure from international partners to de-escalate and return to negotiations.
