In a striking shift, President Donald Trump has publicly called on Republican lawmakers to support the release of sealed documents related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, including client lists and communications tied to his alleged sex trafficking network.
Trump’s statement, delivered via his Truth Social platform, marks a reversal from his previous silence on the matter. “The American people deserve to know the full truth,” he wrote, adding that “no one is above the law, no matter how powerful.”
The move comes amid growing bipartisan pressure for transparency, following a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showing that 69% of Americans believe the government is hiding Epstein’s alleged client list, with even a majority of Republicans (62%) and Democrats (82%) expressing distrust.
Trump’s pivot is seen as both a political calculation and a response to mounting public scrutiny. His critics note that he had previously distanced himself from the case, despite past associations with Epstein. Supporters argue the call for disclosure aligns with his broader anti-establishment messaging.
Congressional Republicans appear divided. Some, like Rep. Matt Gaetz, have echoed Trump’s call, while others remain cautious, citing legal and privacy concerns. House Speaker Mike Johnson has yet to commit to a vote on the matter.
The Department of Justice has not commented on whether it will comply with any congressional resolution, but legal experts suggest that releasing the files could trigger a wave of litigation and reputational fallout for high-profile individuals.
Background: Epstein died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide, but conspiracy theories have persisted, fuelled by the secrecy surrounding his connections to global elites.
