President Donald Trump has formally authorised covert CIA operations in Venezuela, intensifying pressure on President Nicolás Maduro’s regime amid ongoing political and economic turmoil.
According to senior U.S. officials cited by Reuters, the directive allows the CIA to expand intelligence-gathering and influence operations targeting key figures within Venezuela’s military and government. The move is part of a broader strategy to destabilize Maduro’s grip on power and support opposition efforts.
The authorization reportedly includes cyber capabilities, psychological operations, and coordination with regional allies. While details remain classified, sources suggest the CIA’s footprint in Caracas and border regions has already grown.
Maduro’s government condemned the decision, calling it “imperialist aggression” and warning of retaliatory measures. Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry accused Washington of violating international law and undermining sovereignty.
This escalation comes as Venezuela continues to grapple with hyperinflation, mass migration, and dwindling oil revenues. Analysts warn that increased U.S. involvement could further polarise the region and complicate diplomatic efforts.
