Tehran Condemns US Ship Seizure as ‘Piracy’

April 20, 2026, at 09:00 GMT

Iran denounced the United States’ seizure of an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, branding it “armed piracy” and vowing retaliation. The incident intensifies the ongoing US–Israel war on Iran, which Washington claims is aimed at halting Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Just hours earlier, President Donald Trump announced plans to send a team to Islamabad for possible talks, but Iranian officials rejected negotiations unless the US blockade is lifted. Meanwhile, a fragile 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon continues to hold, allowing thousands of displaced residents to return to southern areas to inspect damaged homes. The seizure has heightened global energy concerns, as the Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint for oil shipments. Analysts warn that Iran’s vow of retaliation could involve military or cyber responses, while diplomatic outreach risks collapse without sanctions relief. Oil markets and shipping routes remain under close watch as tensions escalate.
