A Reuters investigation reveals the inner workings of Houthi governance in northern Yemen, painting a picture of authoritarian control marked by secret prisons, ideological indoctrination, and systemic corruption.
The Houthis, who seized Sanaa in 2014 and now control much of northern Yemen, have built a regime centered around their leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi. His image dominates public spaces, and dissent is met with swift punishment. Former detainees describe torture and indefinite detention in clandestine facilities.
International aid workers and Yemeni officials accuse the Houthis of diverting food aid meant for starving civilians. Reports indicate that humanitarian supplies are routinely seized and resold or redirected to loyalists, exacerbating the country’s humanitarian crisis.
The group also enforces strict social codes and uses religious education to cultivate loyalty among youth. Critics say this amounts to a personality cult that suppresses pluralism and entrenches Houthi ideology.
Despite international condemnation, the Houthis maintain control through fear, propaganda, and strategic manipulation of foreign aid.
