EU Greenlights Gilead’s Long-Acting HIV Prevention Shot

Brussels, August 27

The European Medicines Agency has approved a groundbreaking injectable treatment from U.S. pharmaceutical giant Gilead Sciences, designed to prevent HIV infection. The drug, known commercially as Lenacapavir, offers long-acting protection and is administered just twice a year.

Public health experts hail the move as a major step forward in HIV prevention, especially for high-risk populations across Europe. Unlike daily oral PrEP regimens, the injection simplifies adherence and could dramatically reduce new infections.

Gilead stated that the approval aligns with its global mission to “end the HIV epidemic for everyone, everywhere.” The company plans to roll out the treatment in select EU countries by early 2026.
