Belgium to Recognize Palestine, Sanction Israel

Belgium to formally recognize Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly and impose sanctions on Israel.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot declared that Belgium will officially recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming UN session (Sept 9–23). The move is framed as a response to the “humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Gaza.”

Key Measures:

  • 12 Sanctions on Israel: Belgium will enforce a package of sanctions, including:
    • A ban on imports from Israeli settlements
    • A review of public procurement policies involving Israeli companies
  • ICC War Crimes Referral: Belgian prosecutors have referred a war crimes complaint against two Israeli soldiers to the International Criminal Court, citing alleged atrocities in Gaza.
  • Contextual Stats: Israel’s war on Gaza has reportedly killed 63,459 people and wounded 160,256.
  • Global Momentum: Belgium joins a growing bloc—147 UN member states (75%) already recognize Palestine. France, Australia, and others are expected to follow suit this September.
