Wayward SpaceX Rocket Hits the Moon

August 6, 2026, 10:15 GMT (3:45 PM Sri Lanka local time)

A derelict SpaceX rocket stage has indeed slammed into the Moon, exactly as astronomers had predicted. The impact occurred on the far side, out of Earth’s direct view, but orbital monitoring data verified the collision.

Scientists say the crash created a new crater, offering a rare opportunity to study how human‑made debris interacts with lunar geology. While the rocket was never intended to reach the Moon, its trajectory went astray after a 2015 launch, drifting through space until gravity pulled it into a lunar collision course.

The incident highlights growing concerns about space debris management, as more private companies and national agencies expand deep‑space missions. Researchers argue that uncontrolled hardware poses risks not only to Earth’s orbit but also to celestial bodies like the Moon.
