Tel Aviv Targets Hamas Leadership as Gaza Strategy Intensifies

Tensions in the Gaza Strip escalated sharply over the weekend as Israeli forces confirmed the targeted killing of Hamas spokesperson Abu Obaida, a prominent figure in the group’s media operations. The strike, carried out in northern Gaza, comes amid growing speculation that Israel’s security cabinet is preparing to expand its military offensive.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened the cabinet late Sunday to discuss strategic options, including deeper incursions into southern Gaza and intensified aerial campaigns. The move follows weeks of cross-border rocket fire and retaliatory airstrikes, which have left hundreds dead and displaced thousands.

Military officials stated that Obaida’s elimination was “a critical blow to Hamas’s psychological warfare,” though the group vowed revenge, calling the strike “cowardly and criminal.” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that “no Hamas leader is beyond reach,” signaling a possible shift toward decapitation tactics.

International observers have urged restraint, with Egypt and Qatar pushing for renewed ceasefire talks. Meanwhile, humanitarian agencies report worsening conditions in Gaza, where fuel shortages and damaged infrastructure are hampering relief efforts.

The cabinet is expected to reconvene midweek to finalize operational plans, as regional allies brace for potential fallout.
