The family behind Samsung Group has completed payment of a record $8 billion inheritance tax, following the death of patriarch Lee Kun‑hee. The settlement, one of the largest in South Korea’s history, underscores the immense wealth tied to the conglomerate and the government’s strict tax regime on chaebol dynasties.
The heirs, including Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Jae‑yong, financed the bill through a mix of dividends, loans, and share pledges. Analysts note the payment could reshape ownership structures within Samsung, while also serving as a landmark case in South Korea’s efforts to curb concentrated family wealth.
