Parade Diplomacy and Power Messaging

At China’s largest military parade in decades, President Xi Jinping declared that the world faces a pivotal choice: “peace or war, dialogue or confrontation.” His speech emphasized China’s commitment to sovereignty and military modernization, without directly naming Taiwan.

In a Truth Social post, former President Donald Trump accused Beijing of conspiring against the U.S., sarcastically sending “warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un” both of whom attended the parade. He also demanded recognition for America’s WWII support to China.

Held at Tiananmen Square, the parade showcased China’s latest military hardware, including missiles and fighter jets. Over 20 foreign leaders attended, notably Putin and Kim, while Western leaders were absent. South Korea declined the invitation; India’s PM Modi met Xi earlier but skipped the parade.

Xi’s remarks positioned China as a stabilizing force amid global tensions, while Trump’s post underscored deepening mistrust. Analysts note China’s growing influence in Southeast Asia and its pivot toward the Global South as Western alliance’s fray.
