Tariff Tensions Rise Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced he does not plan to extend the 90-day pause on additional global tariffs beyond July 9. This pause was initially granted to allow countries time to negotiate trade deals with the U.S.
India’s Diplomatic Push India’s trade delegation has extended its stay in Washington, hoping to finalize an interim agreement before the deadline. India is seeking full exemption from the 26% reciprocal tariff announced by the U.S. on April 2, though a 10% baseline tariff remains in place.
Key Sticking Points:
The U.S. wants India to open its agricultural market to genetically modified crops, which India has resisted due to concerns for farmers.
India is pushing for a deal that includes sectoral access and reciprocal tariff relief on its exports.
Strategic Stakes for India, the goal are to protect sensitive sectors while gaining better access to the U.S. market. For the U.S., it’s about reducing trade deficits and expanding exports—especially in agriculture, dairy, and energy.
Trump’s Tone, Trump stated in a Fox News interview: > “Congratulations, we’re allowing you to shop in the United States of America, you’re going to pay a 25 per cent tariff, or a 35 per cent or a 50 per cent or 10 per cent.” He emphasized that letters notifying countries of the new tariffs will go out “pretty soon”.
