On Wednesday, a 23-year-old assailant opened fire at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis during a school mass, killing two children and injuring 17 others before taking their own life.
Survivor’s Account
Weston Halsne, a 10-year-old fifth grader, was seated near the stained-glass windows when the shooting began. He described the chaos as “shots fired… we kind of got under pews” and recalled feeling gunpowder on his neck.
A Friend’s Brave Act
Weston says his friend Victor shielded him, jumping on top of him and taking a bullet to the back. “My friend Victor, like, saved me… I hope you’re OK and I’m praying for you,” Weston told reporters.
Safety Protocols
Students had practiced active shooter drills at school, but never in church settings. The incident has reignited calls for broader safety measures in religious institutions.
