Gaza City, December 16, 2025
A Palestinian infant has frozen to death in the Gaza Strip as winter temperatures plunge and Israel maintains tight restrictions on the entry of shelter supplies and humanitarian aid.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed that Mohammed Khalil Abu al-Khair, just two weeks old, succumbed to severe hypothermia after his family sought medical treatment. The tragedy highlights the vulnerability of displaced families living in makeshift tents on wet ground, with little protection against the cold.
Al Jazeera’s reporting from Gaza City noted that basic protections have been “systematically dismantled” during Israel’s ongoing military campaign. Aid convoys carrying tents, blankets, and other essential supplies remain blocked, leaving families exposed to lethal conditions.
Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that the winter cold has become deadly, particularly for infants and the elderly. The death of baby Mohammed adds to a growing toll of preventable fatalities in the besieged enclave, where more than 1.6 million people are displaced and struggling to survive without adequate shelter.
Local authorities and aid groups have condemned the restrictions, calling them a violation of international humanitarian law. The incident has sparked renewed appeals for urgent intervention to allow life-saving supplies into Gaza.
