India Surpasses China in U.S. Smartphone Exports

India’s smartphone exports to the U.S. surged 240% year-over-year in Q2 2025, now accounting for 44% of U.S. imports, up from just 13% last year.

China’s share dropped sharply to 25%, down from 61% a year earlier. Vietnam also edged ahead of China, contributing 30% of U.S. smartphone imports.

Apple is driving the surge, accelerating its “Made in India” strategy. In April alone, 3 million iPhones were shipped from India to the U.S., while China’s shipments fell to 900,000.

The shift reflects growing trade tensions and tariff uncertainty between the U.S. and China. Apple aims to manufacture 25% of its global iPhones in India within a few years.

Other Players:

Samsung and Motorola are also moving some final assembly to India, though at a slower pace compared to Apple.
