Damascus, December 8, 2025
Mass Celebrations:
Syrians poured into the streets of Damascus, Aleppo, Hama, and other cities to celebrate the first anniversary of the ousting of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad. Fireworks lit up the skies, flags adorned public squares, and music echoed through neighborhoods as citizens marked the milestone.
Historic Turning Point:
The Assad dynasty, which ruled Syria for 53 years, collapsed after a lightning 11-day offensive by opposition forces last year. The fall ended nearly 14 years of war that devastated the nation and displaced millions.
Official Remarks:
President Ahmed al-Sharaa addressed the nation from Damascus, praising the courage of those who fought to overthrow the regime. He declared, “Today we mark one year of liberating Syria from the shackles of tyranny and dictatorship, restoring the country once again to greatness.”
Return of Refugees:
One year on, nearly 1.8 million displaced Syrians and 780,000 refugees have returned home, signalling cautious optimism for recovery. At the height of the conflict, 6.8 million Syrians fled, creating one of the world’s largest migration crises.
Public Sentiment:
For many Syrians, the anniversary represents both relief and hope. Residents described the day as an “exhalation” after decades of repression, though challenges of reconstruction, economic hardship, and political stability remain.
Outlook:
The anniversary underscores Syria’s fragile transition. While celebrations highlight renewed optimism, the country faces daunting tasks: rebuilding infrastructure, reintegrating millions of returnees, and stabilising governance under President al-Sharaa. The jubilant scenes of flags and fireworks reflect a collective yearning for normalcy after years of war, but the path forward remains uncertain.
