CBSL Launches National Campaign Against Pyramid Schemes

Colombo, July 14, 2025 — The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has launched a nationwide campaign dubbed “Anti-Pyramid National Awareness Week,” running from July 14 to 18, under the bold theme: “Pyramid is a trap – don’t get into the wrong track.”

Protecting Citizens, Preserving Stability

The initiative aims to combat the growing threat of prohibited pyramid schemes, which are illegal business models promising rapid returns but often result in devastating financial loss and systemic instability. CBSL stresses that the campaign aligns with its core mandate of ensuring financial system stability and safeguarding consumers from fraud.

Targeting All Layers of Society

Outreach will span a wide demographic, including:

  • School students and teachers
  • Officers from the Tri-Forces, Civil Security Department, and Police
  • Government employees
  • General public

Education efforts will be conducted across 6,172 schools and 14,022 Grama Niladhari divisions, ensuring deep grassroots engagement across Sri Lanka.

Participants will receive education on:

  • Legal consequences of engaging in pyramid schemes
  • Their deceptive structure and operation
  • Real-life victim experiences
  • Tips to identify and avoid scams

CBSL has rolled out a full-spectrum media blitz that includes:

  • Educational posters
  • Live-streamed discussions
  • Radio and TV programs
  • Public seminars
  • News taglines
