Mexico handed over 26 cartel leaders to U.S. authorities, including Abigael González Valencia of “Los Cuinis” (linked to CJNG) and Roberto Salazar, wanted for the 2008 killing of a Los Angeles deputy. Others have ties to the Sinaloa Cartel and other violent networks.
The U.S. agreed not to seek the death penalty, a key condition for Mexico’s cooperation. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated these men “will face severe consequences for their crimes against this country”.
The deal follows Trump’s tariff threats on Mexican imports. In February, Mexico transferred 29 cartel figures, including Rafael Caro Quintero, amid pressure to curb drug trafficking.
Trump has designated eight cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, including CJNG, MS-13, and the Gulf Cartel. Reports suggest he’s signed secret orders for military action against Latin American cartels — raising concerns about sovereignty and escalation.
Mexico’s Balancing Act:
President Claudia Sheinbaum continues to cooperate on security while opposing U.S. military intervention. The latest transfer reflects a delicate dance between enforcement and diplomacy.
