Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand declared that Canada is “leaving no stone unturned” to defend its Arctic sovereignty, as global power shifts make the region increasingly strategic. She emphasized that Arctic security is now a top priority, especially in light of Russia’s growing presence north of the Arctic Circle.
Anand made the remarks during a visit to Helsinki, where she met Nordic counterparts to discuss Arctic cooperation.
She noted that NATO’s focus must expand beyond Europe’s eastern flank to include the Northwest Passage and broader Arctic frontiers.
Russia’s military infrastructure is creeping further north, prompting Canada to reinforce its northern posture.
Canada’s Arctic Foreign Policy Goals:
Protect sovereignty through surveillance, infrastructure, and alliances.
Collaborate with NATO to deter threats and maintain stability.
Monitor increased activity in Arctic waters, including potential Russian incursions.
Anand’s meetings coincided with high-level talks at the White House involving Trump, Zelenskyy, and European leaders on Ukraine’s future. The Arctic’s strategic importance is rising in tandem with global tensions.
