The French government has announced plans to repatriate the remains of Indigenous individuals who were displayed in so‑called “human zoos” during the colonial era. These exhibitions, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, showcased people from Africa, Asia, and Oceania in staged “ethnographic villages,” reinforcing racist stereotypes and colonial dominance.
The decision follows years of pressure from activists and descendant communities, who have demanded dignity and restitution for victims of colonial exploitation. French officials confirmed that the remains will be returned to their countries of origin, with ceremonies planned to honor their memory. Historians note that the move represents a significant step in confronting France’s colonial past, though critics argue it is long overdue and must be accompanied by broader reparations and education initiatives.
