United States President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have hailed what they describe as significant progress toward a long-awaited peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, the two leaders expressed optimism that negotiations are entering their “final stages.” Trump, fresh from a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, told reporters that Moscow and Kyiv are “closer than ever” to ending the nearly four-year war. He described the emerging framework as “a deal that’s good for Ukraine, good for everybody.”
Zelenskyy echoed the sentiment, noting that while territorial disputes remain unresolved, particularly over the Donbas region, negotiators have made headway on security guarantees and other contentious issues. The Ukrainian leader emphasized that the talks mark the most promising moment yet in efforts to halt the conflict, which has devastated his country and strained global stability.
The meeting comes amid continued Russian strikes on Kyiv, underscoring the urgency of a settlement. Analysts caution that while the rhetoric signals progress, territory and sovereignty questions remain the most difficult hurdles.
Trump’s role as mediator has drawn both praise and skepticism. Supporters argue his direct engagement with Putin could accelerate a truce, while critics warn that premature declarations of success risk undermining Ukraine’s negotiating position.
For now, both leaders are projecting confidence. “We are getting a lot closer, maybe very close,” Trump said, framing the talks as a potential turning point in one of the world’s most entrenched conflicts.
