Health authorities are on alert as India faces a fresh outbreak of the Nipah virus, a rare but deadly pathogen transmitted from animals to humans. The virus, first identified in Malaysia in 1999, spreads through fruit bats and contaminated food, with human‑to‑human transmission also possible. Symptoms range from fever and headache to severe respiratory illness and encephalitis, with mortality rates reported as high as 40–75%. Officials stress there is no vaccine or specific treatment, making prevention and rapid containment critical. India has stepped up surveillance and isolation measures to curb the spread.
