Netanyahu Orders Gaza Control Expansion to 70%

May 29, 2026, 10:42 GMT

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced he has directed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to expand control over Gaza to 70%, intensifying military operations in the enclave. The move underscores Israel’s determination to consolidate territorial dominance despite ongoing ceasefire negotiations and international appeals for restraint.

Netanyahu framed the directive as a necessary step to ensure Israel’s security, but critics warn it risks deepening the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where displacement and shortages of food, medicine, and electricity are already severe. Regional analysts suggest the escalation could complicate U.S.–Iran truce talks and further destabilize Lebanon, where spillover tensions remain high.
