Israeli Strike at Gaza Market Kills 18, Including Police Officers

An Israeli drone strike on Thursday killed at least 18 Palestinians in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah, according to doctors and eyewitnesses. The strike reportedly targeted a Hamas-affiliated police unit attempting to regulate market activity and prevent price gouging amid ongoing humanitarian chaos.

Eyewitnesses said the unit, dressed in civilian clothing, was confronting vendors accused of selling looted aid at inflated prices when the strike occurred. Some vendors allegedly brandished weapons, prompting Israeli drones to fire two missiles into the crowded area.

The Hamas-run Interior Ministry condemned the strike, calling it a “new crime” against officers maintaining public order.

The Al-Aqsa Hospital confirmed 18 bodies were received, though it remains unclear how many were police officers.

The incident comes amid widespread food insecurity and clashes over aid distribution in Gaza, with Israel accusing Hamas of diverting humanitarian supplies.

This strike adds to the mounting civilian toll in Gaza, where over 56,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed since the conflict escalated in October 2023.
