Dhaka

Tarique Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has declared victory in Thursday’s landmark parliamentary election, citing provisional results that show the BNP and allies securing 211 of 299 constituency seats. The rival Jamaat‑e‑Islami alliance reportedly won 70 seats.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani leaders Asif Ali Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif extended congratulations, describing Rahman’s win as “decisive” and “resounding.” The Bangladesh Election Commission has yet to release official certified results.

The election marks a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s political trajectory following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in 2024. Observers note that the BNP’s return to power could reshape regional relations and domestic governance priorities.
