Deadly Blast Near Red Fort Triggers Terror Probe

Police Invoke Anti-Terror Law as Investigation Intensifies

NEW DELHI — A car explosion near the historic Red Fort on Monday evening has left at least eight dead and 20 injured, prompting Delhi Police to launch an investigation under India’s stringent anti-terrorism law, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The blast occurred in a slow-moving vehicle that halted at a traffic signal near the monument, in one of the capital’s most heavily guarded zones.

Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the explosion, but forensic teams and intelligence agencies are actively examining the site. The use of UAPA suggests investigators are considering the possibility of a coordinated attack or links to extremist activity.

The incident has rattled residents in Old Delhi, where witnesses described a “window-shattering” blast and scenes of chaos. Security has been tightened across the city, and federal officials say “all angles” are being explored.

This marks one of the rare but deadly explosions in Delhi in recent years, raising fresh concerns about urban security and emergency preparedness.
