Kim Ju Ae: North Korea’s Next in Line?

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appears to be positioning his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, as his successor, according to South Korean intelligence briefings cited in the Times of India article. Ju Ae, believed to be around 13 years old, accompanied her father on a recent visit to China, including attendance at the SCO Summit. Though she avoided public events during the trip, her presence alone was seen as a strategic move to build her profile as the regime’s future leader. South Korean lawmakers noted that officials were observed “wiping out traces” of biological material during the visit using a special plane to transport garbage and ensuring the pair stayed at the North Korean embassy suggesting heightened efforts to protect her identity and health data.

Ju Ae first appeared publicly in 2022 at the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile and has since been seen at several high-profile events, including a Russian Embassy reception. State media has referred to her as Kim’s “respected daughter,” a title typically reserved for top officials, further fueling speculation about her elevated status. She is reportedly home-schooled in Pyongyang and enjoys horse riding, skiing, and swimming. Analysts have observed that she is increasingly taking on roles previously associated with her mother, Ri Sol Ju, indicating a symbolic shift in her public positioning.

While Pyongyang has never officially confirmed her identity, Ju Ae is widely believed to be the same child Dennis Rodman met during his 2013 visit to North Korea. Her growing visibility and the regime’s careful orchestration of her appearances suggest that the Kim dynasty may be preparing to extend its rule through a new generation—though questions remain about whether a female successor would be accepted within the deeply patriarchal structure of North Korean leadership.
