Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Tianjin, China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit starting August 31.
This marks his first visit to China since June 2018, signaling a diplomatic thaw after years of strained ties.
The visit comes as India–US relations face their worst crisis in years:
President Trump imposed record-high tariffs on Indian goods.
He’s threatening further penalties over India’s Russian oil purchases.
Trump also warned of a 10% tariff on BRICS nations for “aligning with anti-American policies.”
Modi and Xi Jinping held reconciliation talks at the BRICS summit in Russia last October.
India and China are gradually defusing border tensions that flared in 2020.
The SCO summit will include Russia, adding weight to India’s balancing act between global powers.
Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Adviser, is currently in Russia, discussing:
Oil imports
Defence cooperation, including S-400 air defense systems
A potential Putin visit to India
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar is expected to follow with a visit soon.
Economic Implications:
India fears losing $64 billion in export competitiveness due to Trump’s crackdown.
However, the RBI held its GDP forecast steady at 6.5%, citing limited direct impact on growth.
