China Launches War Games Around Taiwan as Island Vows to Defend Democracy

Beijing/Taipei, December 29, 2025

China has begun large-scale military exercises encircling Taiwan, a move Beijing describes as a warning against “separatist forces” and foreign interference. The drills, announced by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), include naval maneuvers, air patrols, and simulated strikes, underscoring rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan’s government responded defiantly, pledging to defend its democracy and sovereignty. President Lai Ching-te condemned the exercises as “provocative and destabilizing,” while Taiwan’s defense ministry reported tracking dozens of Chinese aircraft and warships near its territory.

The war games follow recent U.S. congressional visits to Taipei and expanded security cooperation between Taiwan and Western allies. Analysts note that Beijing’s show of force is intended both as a domestic signal of strength and as a strategic warning to Washington.

Regional neighbors, including Japan and the Philippines, expressed concern over the escalation, urging restraint to avoid miscalculation. The drills highlight the fragile balance of power in East Asia, where Taiwan’s democratic stance continues to clash with Beijing’s claims of sovereignty.

For now, Taiwan insists it will not be intimidated. “We will stand firm in defending freedom,” Lai declared, framing the confrontation as a test of democratic resilience in the face of authoritarian pressure.
