Jimmy Kimmel Suspended After Remarks on Charlie Kirk’s Murder

Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, surrendered after a two-day manhunt and now faces aggravated murder charges.

Kimmel’s Controversial Monologue:

On his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel accused the “MAGA gang” of politicizing Kirk’s death, saying they were “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them” and using the tragedy to “score political points”. He also mocked President Trump’s response, comparing it to “how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish”.

Backlash and Suspension:

The remarks triggered outrage among conservatives and drew criticism from FCC Chair Brendan Carr, who warned broadcasters to “operate in the public interest” or face consequences. ABC, owned by Disney, announced an indefinite suspension of Kimmel’s show, citing the need to reflect community values during a sensitive political moment.

Contrary to early speculation, Robinson’s text messages revealed he had grown politically opposed to Kirk, stating he “had enough of his hatred” and that “some hate can’t be negotiated out”. This undermined Kimmel’s implication that the shooter was a MAGA supporter.
